Film Screenings & Record Release Concert

Listening with Anthropocene brings together experimental film and music that attune to landscapes shaped by violence, extraction, radiation, and deep ecological time. On 25 November at 19:00, the programme presents Eliana Otta’s Asking Trees, Birds, and Ghosts about Future Images and Sound, a poetic 360-degree video work honouring Indigenous communities and environmental defenders in the Peruvian Amazon; Olia Sosnovskaya’s Fog is the bison of history, which traces the Białowieża Forest and Polish-Belarusian border through walking, memory, and contested histories; and Katrin Euller’s Leftovers, a choreographic video essay shot in Austria’s only nuclear facility. The evening concludes with Future Ruins, a quadraphonic concert and record release by Zosia Hołubowska, transforming research into the afterlives of nuclear testing into immersive speculative soundscapes. Together, these works invite a form of listening that remains attentive to what is damaged, concealed, and still regenerating.

ABOUT:

Asking Trees, Birds, and Ghosts about Future Images and Sound is a poetic exploration of 360-degree video material recorded in the Peruvian Amazon, in Indigenous communities where leaders and environmental defenders were recently murdered. By delving into the possibilities of editing 360-degree video, combining animation techniques and collaborating with sound artists and poets, I created an experimental film. The original footage has been now taken in unexpected audiovisual directions, aiming to honor the rich complexity of the entangled sentient networks it depicts and to create a collective homage to life’s regenerative capacities and the beings, both human and non-human, that sustain them.

Fog is the bison of history video approaches Białowieża forest / Bielaviežskaja pušča at the Polish-Belarusian border through the choreography of walking. Walking through the forest, border, museum displays, memorial sites, and walking in a protest march is a political gesture of moving through overlapping temporalities and landscapes marked by state and imperial violence, forced migration, extractivism and ecological crises, tracing what is visible and what gets concealed. Tracing, how deep time of primeval forest and its multiple histories of struggles could resist and escape nationalist discourses of border regimes, fixed national identities and linear historical narratives.

Future Ruins; Zosia Hołubowska’s sophomore album emerges from research into the Anthropocene and the afterlives of nuclear testing. Originally composed for a nine-channel installation at Secession Vienna (2024), the work translates its spatial intensity into a recorded form, unfolding as a series of speculative soundscapes shaped by digital synthesis, field recordings, and voice. Moving through desolate coastal terrains, abandoned infrastructures, and imagined future ruins, the album traces the invisible forces of radiation, power, and geological time.

Combining immersive textures with narrative composition, it invites deep listening while opening a space for reflection on nuclear stewardship, extractive systems, and the fragile resilience of living Earth systems.
