Protest im Film? Film im Protest! Das Kurzfilmprogramm FROG folgt den Spuren des politischen, aktivistischen und radikalen Kinos in Österreich in seinen verschiedenen Erscheinungsformen: laut mit Megafon oder im Stillen zu Hause, tanzend auf der Straße oder animierend am Zeichentisch, kollektiv in der Besetzung oder allein in der Prärie. Genau 50 Jahre nach der Arena-Besetzung - für viele in Wien die gegenkulturelle “Stunde Null” - wirken alte politische Kämpfe immer noch aktuell. Das Programm untersucht die Rolle von Filmschaffenden in gesellschaftlichen Konflikten. Bereits ikonische Arbeiten von VALIE EXPORT, Ruth Beckermann und Maria Lassnig werden kontrastiert mit zeitgenössischen Filmen und eigens von Studierenden für den Abend gedrehten 16mm-Bildern. Im Kopf die Frage: Was kann das sein, eine “Camera activa”, und was kann sie?

Protest in cinema? Film the protest! The short film program FROG follows the historical traces of political, activist and radical cinema in Austria in its various forms: loud with a megaphone or quietly at home, dancing in the streets or animating at the drawing board, collectively in a sit-in or alone on the prairie. Exactly 50 years after the Arena occupation—for many in Vienna, the countercultural starting point—old political struggles still feel relevant today. The program explores the role of filmmakers in these conflicts. Already iconic works by VALIE EXPORT, Ruth Beckermann and Maria Lassnig are contrasted with contemporary films and 16mm footage shot specifically for the evening by students. The question on everyone’s mind: What exactly is a “Camera activa,” and what can it do?
